Winter weather has thrown a wrench into the racing season at Aqueduct, forcing cancellations and leaving fans and industry professionals alike scrambling to adjust. But here's where it gets interesting: the New York Racing Association (NYRA) has just unveiled a revised stakes schedule and a bold plan to add extra race days to make up for lost time. This move, however, isn’t just a simple fix—it’s a collaborative effort involving the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen's Association (NYTHA) and New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB), all of whom must secure approval from the New York State Gaming Commission (NYSGC).
So, what’s on the table? NYRA and its partners are proposing four additional live racing days: Wednesday, February 11; Thursday, February 19; Thursday, February 26; and Thursday, March 5. These dates aim to compensate for the weather-induced disruptions. Meanwhile, a previously approved race day for February 4 has already been rescheduled, with live racing set to resume at Aqueduct (affectionately known as the Big A) on Wednesday, February 3, starting at 1:10 p.m. Eastern.
And this is the part most people miss: the stakes races originally planned for Saturday, January 31, including the high-profile Withers Stakes—a key Kentucky Derby qualifier—along with the Toboggan, Ruthless, and Ladies Stakes, will now take place on Friday, February 6. The Interborough Stakes, which was previously postponed, will also join this revamped card. Entries for the February 6 races will open on January 31, giving trainers and owners a tight window to prepare.
Overnight races originally scheduled for January 31 will return as extras on February 6 and beyond, while those from February 1 will be added to the proposed makeup day on February 11. Races from the existing Condition Book will fill the live racing schedule from February 12 to 15. NYRA will release an updated Condition Book covering February 19 through March 8 to keep everyone in the loop.
Aqueduct Racetrack will remain open for simulcast operations from Friday to Sunday, ensuring fans can still enjoy the action even when live racing isn’t happening. But here’s the controversial part: Is this revised schedule enough to satisfy all stakeholders, or will it create new challenges for trainers, jockeys, and bettors?
