Energy Bills on the Rise: Martin Lewis' Urgent Advice
In a recent Twitter storm, renowned money expert Martin Lewis has issued a stark warning to energy consumers: fix your rates now, or risk paying significantly more in the near future. With the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, specifically Iran, causing a ripple effect on global energy markets, Lewis is urging people to take action.
"Don't delay!" Lewis exclaimed. "Energy companies are already increasing prices, and the situation in Iran is only going to push them higher."
Lewis' advice is simple: lock in a fixed-rate energy plan now to avoid the impending price hike. Currently, consumers can secure rates that are 14% lower than the upcoming price cap, but Lewis warns this window of opportunity won't last.
"The spike in gas prices due to the Iran conflict is substantial and will primarily impact new fixed-rate tariffs," Lewis explained. "If this spike persists, we could see energy prices rise from July onwards."
But here's where it gets controversial: Lewis suggests that even with the price cap reduction of £117 from April 1, fixed deals that currently offer better rates than the cap are likely to increase in price. So, while the price cap reduction is welcome news, it may not provide the long-term savings consumers are hoping for.
And this is the part most people miss: the government is changing the way energy bills are calculated, shifting some policy costs to general taxation. This means that even if you fix your rates now, your overall energy costs will still drop by 7% to 9% on average from April 1.
So, while fixing your rates offers peace of mind and potential savings, the changing landscape of energy pricing means it's a complex decision.
