Girard Water Main Break Repaired: Boil Advisory in Effect - What You Need to Know (2026)

Water Main Break in Girard: Boil Advisory in Effect

A recent water main break in Girard has been resolved, but it has left residents in the Beechwood Avenue area, between Park Avenue and Churchill Road, under a boil advisory. The Girard Water Department issued the advisory as a precaution due to potential contamination during the depressurization of the water lines.

The break occurred on Monday and was promptly repaired by 6:30 p.m., according to Girard Water Superintendent Mike Scoville. During the repairs, 44 homes along Beechwood Avenue experienced a brief water outage, lasting approximately one hour.

The boil advisory is a standard procedure to ensure public health and safety. Scoville advised residents to use cold water from their taps for boiling, as hot water may release lead contaminants from standard faucets. It's important to note that boiling water only removes bacteria, not lead, as per EPA guidelines.

The water department recommends that residents bring their cold water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before consuming, or alternatively, use bottled water for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, food preparation, and brushing teeth. Two negative samples are required before the advisory is lifted, and a sample was taken on Monday evening, with the advisory expected to remain in effect for residents for approximately two to three days.

This precautionary measure is a standard protocol to ensure the safety of the community, and the water department is working diligently to lift the advisory as soon as possible.
