Canaletto's Dazzling Debut: A New Star is Born
In a highly anticipated race, Canaletto, a colt with an impressive pedigree, left everyone in awe as he dominated the track. With a name inspired by the renowned Venetian painter, Canaletto lived up to his artistic namesake, painting a picture of sheer brilliance on his debut.
As the 7-5 favorite, he broke from the gates with confidence, quickly taking the lead. His rival, Spartacus, tried to keep up, but Canaletto's smooth strides and early speed left him in the dust. By the far turn, Canaletto had already established a commanding lead, cruising effortlessly with an opening quarter in 23.88 and four furlongs in :46.60.
The rest of the field was left trailing as Canaletto entered the home stretch, and the only question remaining was the margin of his victory. In the end, he crossed the finish line a whopping eight lengths ahead of Lost Money, leaving no doubt about his superior talent.
A Rising Star for Into Mischief
Canaletto, a son of Into Mischief, is the newest addition to the 'Rising Star' roster. His journey began at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky February sale in 2024, where he was sold for $650,000 as a short yearling. His potential was recognized, and he returned to the auction ring in August of the same year, fetching an impressive $1 million at the Saratoga sale.
But here's where it gets interesting... Canaletto is not just any ordinary colt. He is a half-brother to some of the industry's top performers. Sandman, a GISW earning over $1.5 million, and She Can't Sing, a GSW with earnings of $883,558, both share the same dam as Canaletto. Additionally, Blameitonthemusic, the dam of SW Curahee (War of Will), is also a full sister to Canaletto's dam, Distorted Music.
Distorted Music herself has an impressive lineage, being a half-sister to Zinzay (Smart Strike), the dam of SW & GISP Moon Over Miami (Malibu Moon). And this is the part most people miss... Canaletto's immediate female family includes MGISW Music Note (A.P. Indy), a two-time runner-up in the GI Breeders' Cup Ladies Classic (now renamed the Distaff). Music Note's most famous son, G1 Dubai World Cup winner Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper), also hails from this distinguished family.
On January 25, 2026, Canaletto made his debut at Gulfstream, winning the $68,000 maiden special weight race over a mile. With Flavien Prat in the saddle, he showcased his talent and potential, earning the 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' honors.
Owned by a prestigious group including Mrs. John Magnier, Michael B. Tabor, Derrick Smith, Peter M. Brant, and Brook T. Smith, Canaletto is trained by the renowned Chad Brown. His victory sets him on a promising path, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for this rising star.
